Jonathan Swift’s Essay A Modest Proposal, and Voltaire’s...

There are two vastly differing works of literature that employ similar elements of satire, whether the story is long or short, essay or novella. In these two works, the authors bring light to ongoing social, political, and philosophical issues of their time and age. The two works I am referring to are Jonathan Swift’s satirical essay, A Modest Proposal, and Voltaire’s novella, Candide, or Optimism. In both A Modest Proposal and Candide, there is a portrayal of irony, cold logic and reasoning rather than emotion, and misguided philosophy. Exploring the issues within these texts can implement a better understanding of not only the literature itself, but also the historical context and the issues of the time. By delving even deeper into†¦show more content†¦This can also be seen when Pangloss churns out philosophical discourse rather than obtaining the oil and wine Candide was begging for after the shipwreck and the earthquake. ’Alas!’ said he to Pan gloss, ‘get me a little wine and oil; I am dying.’ ‘This concussion of the earth is no new thing,’ answered Pangloss. ‘The city of Lima, in America, experienced the same convulsions last year; the same cause, the same effects; there is certainly a train of sulphur under ground from Lima to Lisbon.’ ’Nothing more probable,’ said Candide; ‘but for the love of God a little oil and wine.’ ’How, probable?’ replied the philosopher. ‘I maintain that the point is capable of being demonstrated.’ Candide fainted away, and Pangloss fetched him some water from a neighbouring fountain.† On the other hand, the speaker in A Modest Proposal has immaculate knowledge of his country’s financial situation, overpopulation, and famine. He demonstrates this knowledge through careful calculations of how to handle the proposal that he is making. However, there is no use of emotion or empathy in making t hese calculations â€Å"computations;† there is no thought of the moral implications of this proposal and the fact that this can be considered mass genocide based on social class. My mom and dad were always patient with our crying fits and monsters that hid under our beds at night. The snotty girls that I dealt with for eight years taught me to not always care about what people think of me and not to worry about materialistic things. I saw many best friends get hurt because something better came along. That world showed me that I didn’t want to be anything like that. During that time of my life, not once did I have a boyfriend or boast about my family’s well-being. I became an independent person because of Hockaday and the lessons I learned at that school helped me to mature throughout my high school years. Culver. So much to say about Culver. I heard about Culver, visite d Culver, and even rode a horse at Culver before becoming a student. Part of my dad’s life revolved around this school so I had been exposed to it since a young age. Once my brother, Robert, had been accepted and enrolled for a year, I decided Culver was the place I wanted to spend my high school years. I specifically remember the graduation of 2002; I was a 7th grader, too young to apply to the school but so anxious to get here. While I watched the young women pass through the arch, I knew someday I would walk through that very arch and exchange handshakes with Dean Weaser. Finally, I am a senior and my time is approaching rapidly. Before I skip to graduation, I would like to talk about the lessons Culver taught me and the characteristics it influenced upon me. First, I learned that typical teenagers drink, smoke, and swear. The world I came from sheltered me from those aspects of life. Being a boarder and living with people from around the world, I now see the realties of issues and pressure teenagers face. This may sound like a negative take on Culver; however, I believe it has helped me learn to not give into peer pressures and to make responsible decisions. At the same time, I experienced things at Culver that make me feel more like a normal eighteen year old. I also believe that I will go to college with a greater knowledge of my limits and I will not have the desire to do something because I have yet to. Second, I learned to obey the rules and always do my homework. At home I could usually get away with breaking the rules here and there. Culver definitely has a tight grip on every action we do. The close watch has persuaded me that it is easier to simply obey the rules. Homework, on the other hand, has always been an important necessity to me. Like I said, Hockaday is a prestigious school that taught me at the age of six to do my homework and to do it well. One thing Hockaday failed to focus on was time management. Culver taught me over my four years to manage my time wisely and I know that will be a key aspect of continuing on to college. Aside from teenage life and school, the most important part that Culver gave me is relationships. Not only have I become friends with so many incredible students, I have become friends with some teachers over my four years. After losing a class every year, I truly understand to cherish the people around me and the time I have with them. I met my best friends the first couple weeks of freshman year; two of them being my very own roommates. The five of us stuck together for four years and we created unbreakable bonds. Those girls will be people I keep in touch with throughout my life because they made my high school experience what it was. I also consider my boyfriend one of my best friends. He knows every detail of my personality, just like my five girl friends, and he has been one of the most important influences on my Culver career. Relationships can make or break a person’s expe rience and I was lucky enough to find people I trust and care about. I know looking back in ten, twenty, fifty years I am going to remember two things: my teachers and my friends. Malaysia's National Snack Malaysia's National Snack I went to a Malaysian restaurant with my family last weekend to try some new Asian dishes we never tasted before. The name of the restaurant is Yazmin Malaysian Restaurant. That restaurant is located on Las Tunas Drive, San Gabriel. We ordered the curry noodles, the spicy chicken wings, the curry squids, and the satay. Among the foods we ordered, I would like to describe a dish that is called Satay. It is so delicious, and it is a new Asian dish that I never tasted before. There are many interesting Malaysian traditional things in that Malaysia restaurant. The restaurant was decorated by hanging the Malaysian traditional kites and posters with Malaysia famous places. Besides the kites and the posters, there also has some traditional clothes on the walls. The boss called that is the Batik clothes. Thus, I felt that I was like that I was eating in Malaysia in that time. We ordered some Malaysia traditional foods, and one of those dishes that I like it very much. That is Satay. Satay is a barbecued meat on a skewer. There are five skewers on a plate accompany with some bite-size cubes of cold, cook rice and the cool slices of cucumber, and uncook red onion. Along with it, there is a smaller plate filled with spicy peanut gravy. By using the same skewer, I dipped the meat into the spicy peanut gravy before I tasted it. Then, I speared a cube of cold, cook rice, and dipped into the gravy. Besides the bite-size of rice, I also speared a slice of cucumber and a slice of red onion, and dipped them into the gravy. It is so delicious until I had eaten up all the satay. Satay's meat is marinated and threaded through thin bamboo skewers before grilled. When it is grilled, it is basted with margarine by using a lemon grass as brush. I believe this made the smell better. However, the satay gravy has more complicated ingredients. It contains of peanuts, onion, garlic, chilies, lemon juices, coconut milk, ground cumin, ground turmeric, and chopped lemon grass. The cucumber and onion are prepared uncook and cut into slices. The rice cubes are made of plain rice which cook with coconut milk instead of water. I like to eat the gravy because it contains peanuts in it. The peanuts made the gravy so crunchy and I like it very much. The satay's meat is also good. However, when the satay became cold, I felt hard to chew. I like the rice cubes and the cucumber very much, but not the uncook onion because it was smelled bad after eating. Satay is a traditional food of Malaysia. It is so special compared to the other Asian's food I had tried. Of course, I would like to eat the satay again if I have a chance to go back to that Malaysian restaurant. Art Essays

How the character of Shylock is portrayed in The Merchant of Venice Paper The Merchant of Venice is a play written by William Shakespeare in the late 16th century. There are many subplots as well as the main storyline, which adds depth to the story and helps to show different sides to the characters. The subplots also make the play appeal to a wider audience. Shylock, a wealthy Jew is one of the main characters. During the play his merciless and uncompassionate nature is revealed. The main storyline is about Bassanios journey to get to his lover Portia, he has to borrow money to travel from the moneylender Shylock and this makes his friend Antonio in trouble. There are many themes that run through the play, such as love, trust, hate, loyalty, family and anti-Semitism. Throughout the play Shakespeare uses language for figurative, poetic and dramatic effect, using soliloquies and other language devices. As the title suggest I will be looking at the moral and philosophical content and how Shylock could be viewed as a victim, villain and a comic character by an Elizabethan audience and how this is today. This confirms what Elizabethans thought about Jews, that they are villains. However Shylock is a more rounded character he is a victim as well as a villain. As Shylock is a complex character the audience doesnt know how to feel, sympathy or hate. Shakespeare raises the moral question of how to treat Jews in society. In act 1 we see Shylock meeting with Bassanio to discuss a loan. Act 1 Scene 3 line 103-104 You call me misbeliever, cut-throat dog, And spit upon my Jewish gaberdine. The audience is shown of Antonios hatred and insults towards Shylock. To an Elizabethan audience it would be humorous to insult Jews. Christians blamed Jews for the death of Jesus. Pontious Pilot (a King) gave the crowd of Jews the choice to crucify Jesus of a thief. The Jewish crowd saved the thief and killed Jesus so Christians feel they are in league with the devil. Christians feel they mus t punish the Jews for it and Christians feel that they must try and convert them to Christianity to save them. However this also portrays Shylock as a victim as it shows the prejudices against him. A modern audience would find this racist, anti-Semitism unacceptable. Shakespeare uses a simile here for figurative effect and to add layers of meaning and show Jews as an inferior species. Antonio also has other reasons to hate Shylock. As Antonio reveals in Act1 Scene 3 Line 86. Was this inserted to make interest good? Antonio is suspicious of Shylock and his religion. Elizabethans at the time thought of Jews as suspicious. Shylock lends money (usury) and charge interest, which Antonio hates. Elizabethans thought it was sinful to charge interest on loans. The Merchant of Venice is like other Shakespeare plays in structure, in that it has five acts and has varied plots which is one of the reasons its such a popular play. The play is set in two cities, Venice and Belmont. Belmont is a fictitious city created by Shakespeare to create a contrast to the hard life in Venice. Its a feminine world where Portia and females are in charge and everyone is peaceful and helpful. Where as Venice is a more masculine city where there are Dukes and Lords who control the laws and there is also lots of violence and hate, this creates a contrast to Belmont. When Portia goes to Venice she has to dress up to be clever and beat Shylock at his own game. This adds to the feeling that Shylock is a villain and highlights the violence of Venice. Shakespeare uses prose and poetic language through the play. Prose is used for the characters of lesser importance whereas important characters, such as lords speak in poetic language. Shylock speaks in a mixture of prose and poetic language this is for poetic effect. When Shylock is a victim he speaks in poetic language. However when he is a villain he speaks in prose. This helps to create a different side to the character and creates dramatic effect in the scene. Shakespeare writes in Iambic pentamiter his play looks like a poem in structure, which is why it is difficult to understand.
